If the environments aren't in sync and changes continue to get made in one environment and not the other, then you'll eventually have to conduct a community wide audit to document the differences and get them synced back up. Doing a community wide audit could take up a lot of bandwidth and resources, so it's just something to consider.

It's important to keep stage and prod aligned for several reasons, but a big reason would be the user experience. If a change is made in production and it isn't thoroughly tested, there is a possibility that the change made could take down the production environment, or give users access to areas they shouldn’t have access to.
